Collective Action on Climate Change

In the Pamoja project, which means "together" in Kiswahili, we collaborate with four local organizations and two national-level partners in Kenya and Ethiopia. Together, we implement local initiatives focusing on citizen-led and child-centered resilience to climate change. Children, youth, and families in the area are engaged and actively involved, empowering them to influence their living conditions and shape their future.

Background

At local government level in many African countries, climate change is still viewed through a livelihood/Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) lens. Yet the climate crisis affects multiple rights, particularly child rights, influencing health, education, safety and environment. This intervention will broaden local-level thinking on the climate planning issue in semi-arid locations, fostering children’s and family participation in envisioning a ‘different-looking’ future.

Activities

The partners, along with local stakeholders, will learn about citizen-led, child-focused climate resilient development – approaches Barnfonden has spent the past two years researching and testing. They will visit each-other’s programmes to offer more insightful mentorship to one another as they develop sub-projects to empower citizens, including children/youth and families, to become agents of change.

All sub-projects will address climate as it affects children, but the themes each organisation focuses on may differ: e.g. livelihoods, health, education or child protection. Local experts will be engaged related to the theme chosen. The collaboration will be captured via a documentary, shared online and through webinars nationally and internationally, to demonstrate what citizen-led, child-focused climate resilient development looks like.

Partners

Implemented in collaboration with Aynage Child & Family Development Organisation (AFCDO), Dugda Child & Family Charitable Organisation (DCFCO), Emali Dedicated Children’s Agency (EDCA), Pioneer Child Development Programme, ChildFund Kenya, and ChildFund Ethiopia.

The project is funded with support from Forum Civ and Barnfonden’s monthly donors.

Goals

Inform & Empower

By December 2025, climate-affected citizens, including children and youth, guided by strengthened civil society organisations, are informed and engaging inclimate resilience and climate mitigation decisions and actions to influence short, medium and long-term plans at household and community level, in line with SDG 13 and Paris Agreement.

Community-led best practises

By December 2025, civil society actors disseminate community-led child-focused climate resilience best-practices locally, nationally and internationally, relating local-level actions to SDG 13 and Paris Agreement.
